Why has agriculture been left behind in global climate policy discussions? The New Merchants of Doubt exposes how Big Meat and Dairy have delayed, distracted and derailed action.
Thirty years after international climate negotiations began, sectors like energy and transport have seen significant progress on decarbonisation through renewables and electrification. But the global agriculture industry remains absent from this revolution, despite being responsible for a third of emissions.
The New Merchants of Doubt investigates why. In the process, it reveals the tactics used by one of the world’s most powerful lobbies to delay, distract and derail climate action.
From New Zealand to Europe, the book reveals how some of the biggest meat and dairy companies and their lobby groups weaponized farmer protests, spread online misinformation and used influencers to greenwash their businesses and present themselves as part of the solution. All while aggressively lobbying to reverse environmental legislation and prevent the reform of billions of dollars distributed in the form of farming subsidies.
All royalties from the sale of the book go to the Changing Market Foundation and will help the organisation continue its work in holding powerful companies to account, advocating for ambitious climate policy and fighting misinformation.
Changing Markets Foundation was founded in 2015 by Joakim Bergman and Paul Gilding, lifelong campaigners with experience in the world of business. The foundation was set up to accelerate and scale up solutions to sustainability challenges by leveraging the power of markets. It runs campaigns that expose irresponsible corporate behaviour and create pressure for change across markets and policy.
This book was first published as a 2024 report by The Changing Markets Foundation. After a successful launch, leading to significant interest from the media, civil society partners and academics, Nusa was approached by World Shapers to turn the report into a book. As she embarked on this process, she was supported by the Changing Markets team throughout the process.
